The 2017 Return of Hoppywood & Bine IPL: An LA Beer Week Collab with Karl Strauss

Back in 2015, we got the call from Karl Strauss Brewing Company that they were looking to expand their presence in Los Angeles by taking part in something special for LA Beer Week. For us, it sounded like a no-brainer to work with acclaimed Brewmaster Paul Segura on a unique offering that would be exclusive to LABW. It was then that Hoppywood and Bine IPL was born and has continued the next two years working with brewer Mickail Murawski on a fresh recipe for the IPL in 2016, and now with the head brewer of Karl’s new DTLA brewpub Steven Hicks.

Steven cut his teeth early on working at the now defunct Valiant Brewing in Orange County which gained him valuable experience as he continued down his path that led to him to become Karl’s head brewer for both the Anaheim and DTLA brewpub locations. A big job to say the least. While British ales are a style he personally enjoys brewing and drinking, Steven had been playing with the trending hazy-style IPAs. So, when it came to developing the recipe for the 2017 version of Hoppywood and Bine, hazing the lager is exactly what he wanted to do.

The Recipe

For the mash, it was a mixture of wheat and oats to help create a desired glowing golden haziness for the IPL. And in the spirit of experimentation, generous amounts of Loral and Ekuanot cryo hop powder were used in the kettle and in the later dry-hopping to achieve bursting aromas and flavors of lemon peel, yuzu, and hints of berry. Thirsty yet?

The Brew

On brew day, we met up bright and early with Steven, the Karl Strauss marketing team, and their LA sales reps and chipped in on the brewing process. With Steven guiding the more technical parts, we all helped prep ingredients, add grains and hops, clean equipment, and of course, drink some beers along the way.

Where You Can Drink Hoppywood and Bine IPL

Come on down to Karl Strauss’ awesome new brewpub in DTLA for the Hoppywood & Bine release party on Friday, June 16th. The fun starts at 6pm and will feature special beer and food pairings, a brewery open house, a deconstructed beer station, and merch giveaways when you buy a pint of Hoppywood.
