7 Beer Events in 7 Days for LA Beer Week 2014
The first two days of LA Beer Week 2014 have come and gone. On Saturday the weeklong series of events kicked off with the LA Brewer’s Guild festival at Chinatown Central Plaza in Downtown Los Angeles. There were over 40 LA area and So Cal breweries pouring all styles of beer, food trucks, live music, educational panels, and hop-infused cold brew coffee, which all contributed to a killer kick-off party. Then Sunday was mostly focused on nursing hangovers at beer brunches hosted by various craft beer friendly restaurants around the county.
But this is only the beginning for LA Beer Week! There are a ton of events spread out over the next 7 days for you to choose from. Unfortunately, if you browse the official #LABW6 event calendar, it’s easy to get overwhelmed quickly. That’s why we hand-picked the best event for each day of the week so you don’t have to think, just drink. And who said we didn’t have your back?
Right near Culver City, there’s a pizza and beer spot called the Doughroom, and on Monday they’re letting Beer Paper LA’s Daniel Drennon curate the tap list. And this dude did some work! The 17 awesome, hard to find beers include some deliciously hoppy additions like Alpine Nelson, Ballast Point Sculpin on Nitro, the Beachwood & Drake’s collab Vulcanizer IPA (this beer is amazing), an IPA brewed specially for this event by The Brewery at Abagaile, Monkey Paw SameDay XPA, and Kern River’s 8th Anniversary White IPA. It’s $10 to get in and that includes 2 beers. Get your tickets here: http://thedoughroom.eventbrite.com/?aff=efbevent.
First of all, City Tavern is awesome. The fact that they’re setting up a battle of the South Bay breweries is even awesomer. This event will feature breweries such as Phantom Carriage, El Segundo, Smog City, Monkish, Strand, King Harbor, Abigaile, and Three Weavers. The first keg to kick wins the title of King of City Tavern so head over there on Tuesday and vote (aka drink) for your favorite brewery!
This bi-annual event put on by The Factory Gastrobar in Long Beach is geared specifically toward us hop heads. During American Craft Beer Week and LA Beer Week, The Factory puts together a bunch of super hoppy, high IBU beers for us all to enjoy. This year will feature Knee Deep Brewing’s Hopaholic Quad-IPA, Green Flash Green Bullet Triple IPA, Port Brewing’s Hop 15, and Ohana Brewing’s Rhino Redemption.
This event is probably the one I’m most looking forward to. Basically, the San Francisco Brewer’s Guild and the San Diego Brewer’s Guild are meeting up with the LA Brewer’s Guild at Mohawk Bend on Thursday where they’ll be featuring a bunch of their respective breweries’ offerings. Try a bunch and cast your vote for your favorite beer and the winning brewery will win the coveted Golden Keg award, along with bragging rights of course. Check out all of the participating breweries here: http://labeerweek.com/2014/event/meeting-guilds/.
Library Alehouse is one of the best bars to drink craft beer on the west side, and on Friday they’re featuring the awesome Torrance brewery, Smog City on their taps. The Library will have four of Smog City’s core beers as well as four one-off special variations of those core beers that you probably won’t be able to find elsewhere. If you’re on the west side and have yet to try Smog City’s brews, this will definitely be an event to check out.
This is the annual LA Beer Week flagship event at the awesome 38 Degrees Alehouse. Last year, they featured 20 different hand-selected beer flights from 9 LA area breweries. This year? Who knows, but expect it to be awesome. So far the only breweries we know about are Noble Ale Works and Kern River Brewing. Oh, you know, just two of the best breweries around right now. This event will get crowded, so don’t sleep on it!
Wrap up your LA Beer Week by visiting a local brewery you haven’t been to before. On Sunday, Wolf Creek Brewing in Valencia and Kinetic Brewing in Lancaster are opening up their doors to show you what the hype is all about. At Kinetic, you’ll have the opportunity to tour the brewery and take a peek behind the brewing process with owner Steve Kinsey, all while sipping on Kinetic’s awesome brews (try their Propulsion IPA – it’s fantastic). And at Wolf Creek, you’ll have a chance to meet the brewing team, tour the brewery, taste some special barrel-aged beers, hear live music, eat gourmet sausages, and even play in a giant Jenga tournament. Not a bad way to spend your Sunday and wrap up LA Beer Week 2014 in style!
