Wade’s Wines, Westlake’s Best Kept Craft Beer Secret
Hidden in an unassuming industrial park on the border of Agoura Hills and Westlake Village is Wade’s Wines, an awesome beverage retail shop with a massive selection of not just wine, but also spirits and you guessed it…craft beer. But this post isn’t about Wade’s stock of rare and specialty bottles for sale. It’s about the one of a kind draft beer and wine tasting room in the space adjoining the retail shop.
See, this isn’t your typical So Cal beer bar. The tasting room at Wade’s has this really charming, rustic, early 1900s French vineyard type of feel, complete with vintage wine pressing equipment, aging barrels, grape vines, corks, vintage beer cans, and wooden accents throughout. Oh yeah, and they have around 30 wines on tap to go along with their over 100 draft beers.
Despite what you may read in some of their Yelp reviews, the service at Wade’s has been great each time I’ve gone. They have a super friendly staff that tries their best to point your palate in the right direction or find the person who can. Be sure to look out for my buddy Jay behind the bar, he’ll make sure you love whatever’s in your glass.
Alright, you’re at Hopped LA, so you’re probably thinking “Well, let’s hear what’s up with those IPAs!”. Let me put it to you this way, at Wade’s the IPA selection is so deep that you need to order by the taster so you can try everything you have your eye on without passing out at the bar first.
Stone’s Enjoy By, Figueroa Mountain’s Lizard’s Mouth, Cismontane’s Double Rainbow, Drake’s Hopocalypse, Smog City’s Amarilla Gorilla, and El Segundo’s Hop Tanker were among some of the highlights, but the beer that stole the show was Institution Ale Company’s White Walls IPA, a 6.4% wheat IPA brewed with 100% Citra hops. The combination of its light and wheaty body with intense fruit and citrus flavors was right up my alley and made every beer that followed just a little bit disappointing. I was actually about to order a full pint of White Walls when the keg blew, which brought my session at Wade’s to an abrupt halt.
At Wades, you feel like you were transported to another time and place. The staff is fun, helpful, and passionate about what they do. The vibe is friendly and relaxed. And no matter what style of beer you prefer, Wade’s is going to have something that you’ll get stoked on. Basically, what I’m getting to is, make sure you check this place out.
But head’s up! They have limited hours so call ahead, and they don’t serve food, so be sure you fill up before or after. (Might I suggest a burger from The Lab down the street?)
