DOING GOOD: Santa Monica Brew Works Releases a Special Beer to Benefit COVID-19 Healthcare Workers

“Doing Good” is more than just a phrase, it’s a mindset that the beer community, and the world, needs now more than ever. In this brand new article series, we’re seeking out the charitable fundraising, the positive movements, and the communal giving back that’s going on in our local Los Angeles beer community.

This week we’re toasting to Santa Monica Brew Works with a pint of their Unsung Heroes IPA, a special release Hazy IPA crafted to honor the healthcare workers on the front lines in the fight against coronavirus.

On Saturday, April 18th Santa Monica Brew Works began selling to-go crowlers of Unsung Heroes IPA at their tasting room, with $5 from each crowler sold going to UCLA Health’s COVID-19 Coronavirus Greatest Needs In Patient Care And Healthcare Provider Protection Fund.

Unsung Heroes is a 7% New England-style India Pale Ale featuring flavors of juicy citrus and tropical fruit balanced by slight piney bitterness with a bright hazy yellow appearance. In addition to being part of a worthy fundraising cause, it’s representative of Santa Monica Brew Works’ excellent track record in executing the Hazy IPA style of beers.

Unsung Heroes was initially brewed on International Women’s Day by the female employees of Santa Monica Brew Works as part of the nationwide Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day on March 8th. The brewing team chose to brew a Hazy IPA utilizing Yakima Chief’s Pink Boots Hop Blend consisting of Azacca®, El Dorado®, Idaho Gem™ and Loral® hops.

Then, after coronavirus hit, the women of Santa Monica Brew Works chose to donate to a cause close to their hearts – both figuratively and literally, since the brewery is housed in the same building as UCLA Family Health Center.

While the initiative is scheduled to last through May 31st, Santa Monica Brew Works has seen an overwhelming response to the fundraiser beer from their customers, making it likely that the beer sells out much sooner.

Santa Monica Brew Works is open for beer-to-go Wednesday, Friday, & Saturday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Head down to their tasting room and get your crowlers of Unsung Heroes IPA while they’re still available!
